Mark a Chat or Message as Unread

Mark a Chat or Message as Unread

Mark a chat or an individual message as unread when you want to come back to it later. The chat name stays bold in your Inbox, and a green New line appears above the message you marked so you can find your place again.

How to mark an individual message as unread

Web:

  1. Open the chat from your Inbox.
  2. Hover over the message, then select the three dots (⋮).
  3. Select Mark as unread.

Mobile:

  1. Open the chat from your Inbox.
  2. Long-press the message.
  3. Select Mark as unread.

You can mark any message as unread, including a message you sent yourself.

How to mark a whole chat as unread or read from your Inbox

Web:

  1. Right-click the chat in your Inbox.
  2. Select Mark as unread or Mark as read.

Mobile:

  1. Long-press the chat in your Inbox.
  2. Select Mark as unread or Mark as read.

Mark as unread appears only when the chat is currently read, and Mark as read appears only when the chat is currently unread. Mark as read is available for a whole chat only, not for an individual message.

What happens after you mark a message as unread

  • The message you marked, and every message after it, counts as unread.
  • The chat name is bold in your Inbox and is counted in the Unread tab.
  • A green New line appears above the message you marked.
  • Nobody else is notified, and nothing changes for the other people in the chat.

FAQ

Can you mark a message you sent yourself as unread?

Yes. Marking your own message as unread works the same way as marking someone else’s message, and the green New line appears above it.

Does a message you just sent get a green New line above it?

No. A message you send is never treated as unread, so no green New line appears above it. If you want the line there, mark that message as unread.

How long does the green New line stay in a chat?

The line stays anchored to the message you marked, including when you leave the chat and come back to it. It clears once Expensify treats those messages as read, which happens as you keep using the chat. If the line is gone and you still need it, mark the message as unread again.

Does marking a chat or message as unread notify anyone else?

No. Read state is personal to your account, so marking something as unread never changes what other people in the chat see.

Where can you find all of your unread chats?

Select the Unread tab at the top of your Inbox to see only the chats with unread messages. Learn more about navigating New Expensify.
